India’s textile industry stands as a powerhouse on the global stage, commanding 4 percent of the market share and contributing significantly to the country’s GDP. Employing over 45 million people, it holds the position of the second largest employer in India. The industry’s promising trajectory foresees a production value of $250 billion by 2030.

Over the past five years, the Indian government has directed attention towards enhancing the nation’s role in the global textile arena. Central initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) for textiles and the Kasturi Cotton Bharat program have propelled the industry forward. Maharashtra, featuring prominently in this narrative, boasts a 10.4 per cent share of the total textile and apparel production in India and employs over 10 percent of the sector’s workforce.

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has been instrumental in advancing the state’s textile domain by establishing 11 exclusive textile parks across strategic locations. The state’s abundant cotton cultivation and extensive coastline present a fertile ground for establishing a garment trading hub in Mumbai, enhancing its competitive standing in the global market.

Pioneering policies and interventions have been pivotal in fortifying Maharashtra’s infrastructure to bolster its emergence as a global textile hub. The establishment of the PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park in Amravati, supported by substantial investment and employment opportunities, underlines Maharashtra’s drive for textile sector transformation. The development of mini textile parks, the Integrated and Sustainable Textile Policy 2023-2028, and the focus on technological advancements and skill development underscore the state’s commitment to revolutionise its textile sector and solidify its position as a burgeoning industry player.
