Sharp Drop in Mexican Luggage Prices to $3.5 Per Unit

Mexico Luggage Import Price in April 2023

The cost of luggage in April 2023 was $3.5 per unit (CIF, Mexico), a decrease of -23.7% from the previous month. Overall, the import price trend pattern was quite flat. The rate of growth was 43% faster in September 2022 compared to the prior month. Average import costs peaked throughout the period under consideration in March 2023 at $4.5 per unit before sharply falling the following month.

There was a noticeable difference in prices depending on the nation of origin: China had one of the lowest prices ($1.6 per unit), while Cambodia had one of the highest ($18.3 per unit).

Cambodia (+2.6%) witnessed the highest rate of price growth between April 2022 and April 2023, while the prices of the other main suppliers saw more moderate rates of growth.

Mexico Luggage Import Prices by Type

The product with the highest price was handbags with an outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather ($26.2 per unit), while trunks, suit cases, vanity cases, executive cases, briefcases, school satchels, and similar containers with an outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather had one of the lowest prices ($799 per thousand units). Prices varied noticeably by product type.

Travel sets for personal toilet, sewing, shoe, or clothing washing showed the highest rate of price growth from April 2022 to April 2023 (+19.7%), while the prices for the other products increased at more moderate rates.

Mexico Luggage Imports 

In April 2023, the number of pieces of luggage imported into Mexico soared to 9.9M, a 29% increase from the previous month. Imports somewhat increased throughout the time period under examination. The imports climbed by 68% from the prior month in June 2022, which was the month with the highest growth rate. Imports reached a peak of 18M units in August 2022, but from September 2022 through April 2023, they stalled out.

In terms of value, luggage imports decreased marginally in April 2023 to $34M (IndexBox estimates). Imports displayed a mostly flat trend pattern. The month of July 2022 saw the highest rate of growth, with a 28% increase over the month prior. In October 2022, imports reached their highest level of 60M units throughout the period under study; however, from November 2022 to April 2023, imports were at a little lower level.
