On July 2, the State government’s Director of Handlooms and Textiles assisted the application to the GI register.
Weavers from 15 cooperative societies, including Negamam, Vadambachery, Sulur Kinathukadavu, and Pollachi, have applied for the Negamam Cotton Saree Geographical Indication (GI) badge.
Negamam Cotton Saree, also known as village cot saree, is woven by master weavers from the district’s rural area of Negamam. The saree is well-known for its thickness, length, durability, contrasting colours, and multicoloured thread work of patterns, checks, and designs, among other things. The application was sponsored by the State government’s Director of Handlooms and Textiles to the regis.
Negamam Cotton Saree has registered for Geographical Indication Registration of Products with a GI tag. If authorised, it will be the second cotton product approved in Coimbatore, following Kovai Cora Cotton in 2014. Following the five-stage processes to obtain clearance from the GI panel registry will take up to eight months.
