The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust (formerly Tuticorin Port Trust) in India’s Tamil Nadu state has proposed the establishment of a multimodal logistics park (MMLP) due to benefits such as excellent rail and road connectivity, proximity to the main sea route, all-weather operating parameters, and its locational advantage connecting the eastern and western coasts.

The city has provisionally described three viable locations for the MMLP: Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tuticorin.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, the MMLP would facilitate infrastructure for integrated multimodal freight transmission, as well as specialised storage solutions such as cold storage, warehouses equipped with mechanised handling of materials, and intermodal transfer terminals for containers, bulk, and break-bulk cargo.

The production and manufacturing centre sceneries are primarily in the secondary hinterland, namely Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Salem, Erode, Pollachi, Karur, Rajapalayam, and Madurai.
