This summer, the concrete impact of climate change has been seen around the world, with wildfires, soaring temperatures, and flash floods.
And, as consumer concerns about sustainability continue to escalate, the fashion sector has come under increased scrutiny.
The Trust Protocol is a new programme focusing on more sustainably grown cotton. It has more than 450 members, including fashion and retail giants Next, Levi Strauss & Co and Tesco. Cotton growers enrolled in the Trust Protocol are working towards ambitious environmental goals, including reducing soil loss by 50%, greenhouse emissions by 39%, and water usage by 18%. The Trust Protocol is a US-based company that aims to ensure the sustainability of cotton products through the entire supply chain, from the farm to the mill. The Trust Protocol’s work has already been recognised by leading environmental organisations, and in 2020 its cotton was added to Textile Exchange’s preferred fibres list. In 2021, the Trust Protocol became a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), working to reduce environmental impacts throughout the global value chain.
