Hand block printing is a popular selling item for Jaipur-based fabric and garment producers. It is one of the traditional techniques for adding value to fashion clothes and home furnishings.
Demand in this sector is at least 20% greater this year compared to 2019 and 2018.
This demand for hand blocked products (garments and home furnishings) is entirely from the domestic market, and it comes from a variety of areas – both south and north. Notably, there is no specific explanation for this.
Jaipur is one of the leading hubs for craft like hand blocks. This traditional process of hand block printing on textiles with rich colours has been practised in Rajasthan for around 500 years. Printers are giving priority to the hand block as they don’t have to focus much on compliance or delivering high quality as per export parameters.
The art of hand block was introduced to the Jaipur region by the Chipa community, majorly located in the village of Bagru, an area famous for vegetable dyes and mud resist block prints. Sadly, subsequent generations have not been taking much interest in the art, as a result of which the expertise of this art is gradually getting lost.
