According to a statement issued by the council, EPCH chairman Rajkumar Malhotra discussed problems pertaining to the reinstatement of duty-free import of vital ornamentation, trimmings, and instruments for the handicrafts sector, as well as risky exporters, in a meeting with finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) urged the government on Monday to rethink the tax refund rates under the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) plan.
In RoDTEP, remission rates for handicrafts range from 0.01% to 2.4%.
He stated that the duty-free import provision has aided handicrafts exporters in importing products for adorning their goods such as lighting, lamps, fashion jewellery, and wooden handicrafts.
India’s handicraft exports totaled $3.5 billion in FY21. In August of this year, the government issued tax refund rates under the RoDTEP export promotion plan for 8,555 products such as marine goods, yarn, and dairy items, with rates ranging from 0.5 to 4.3 percent for diverse sectors.
