THE Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) of the Federal Government has authorised a loan of up to $32 million for the construction of Stage 1 of a cotton gin at Kununurra in Western Australia’s Ord region.
The Ord River District Cooperative, Kimberley Agricultural Investment, and Miriuwung Gajerrong Corporation are collaborating to construct the gin from the ground up.
The gin will be an important piece of infrastructure for Ord’s expanding cotton-growing economy.
Building a gin, according to Federal Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud, would eliminate the need to transport cotton cultivated in WA out of the state.
The loan is part of the NAIF’s $5 billion loan facility for infrastructure projects across northern Australia. In January, the WA Government pledged $4 million to provide electricity and preliminary design and approval works to build the gin.
