Elegus Technologies has licenced intellectual property to Soteria Battery Innovation Group, located in Greenville, South Carolina, to increase the battery cycle life and safety of electric cars.
Aramid fibres are used in Soteria’s Dreamweaver nonwoven battery separators for enhanced thermal and chemical stability, preventing the separator from melting or shrinking in the face of a flaw or damage.
With the increasing use of electric powertrains in automobiles and aeroplanes, there is a desire for the costly battery pack to have a longer cycle life.
Lithium-ion cells generate both moisture and hydrofluoric acid as they age, which degrade the cells over time. Elegus Technologies has developed technology utilising nano-aramid fibres that enables the separator to immobilise these harmful elements in the cell. The technology will be able to be implemented on today’s gigafactory lines without an investment in additional equipment or manufacturing lines.
