SIMA hails the amendments to the Tamilnadu Factories Act extending the working hours to 12 hours

Tamil nadu textiles and clothing industry that accounts 1/3 rd of the textile business of the country is one of the largest textile manufacturing hubs on the global map and is constantly being encouraged by the Government of Tamil nadu, to fuel its growth, focusing on value addition, exports and job creation not only for the benefit of the people of Tamil nadu but also for several lakhs of people from other States. In the circumstances, on 21 st April 2023, the Hon’ble Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development, Government of Tamil nadu, passed an amendment to the Tamil nadu Factories Act 1948 by introducing Section 65A allowing the working hours to be extended to 12 hours from the existing 8 hours per day in factories.

In a Press Release issued here today, Mr.Ravi Sam, Chairman, The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) has welcomed the amendments to the Tamilnadu Factories Act which would bring flexibility in working hours benefiting both employer and the employees. He has stated that the amendment with regard to working hours would apply only to the willing workers is a welcome feature. He has said that the industry has been pleading this for a long time to tide over the labour shortage, this amendment has come in handy for the industrial units in Tamilnadu, which is the
major hub for manufacturing units employing large numbers of workers.

SIMA chief further has stated that textile units in the State employ around 50% of migrant labour force and these workers are willing to work more hours. With this amendment, it would help these workers to work for 12 hours and earn more.

He has pointed out that these amendments would take effect in the industrial units subject to getting approval from the Government. He has further said with this amendment, it will boost investment in the State and Tamil nadu will emerge strong in terms of employment, industrial production, etc.
