The international start-up competition “Plan B – Biobased.Business.Bavaria.” held by BioCampus Straubing recognised the finest innovative biobased business ideas for the fourth time.

Kelheim Fibres was represented at the prize event by Dr Crnoja-Cosic, Director New Business Development, and Matthew North, Commercial Director. The maker of unique viscose fibres has partnered with the BioCampus Straubing for many years and is now a prize sponsor of the competition.

Dr. Crnoja-Cosic was honoured to congratulate the newly formed Microbify GmbH team on their third place finish and present them with a check for 3,000 Euros in this capacity. Microbify is a spin-off from the University of Regensburg that focuses on repurposing outdated natural gas storage facilities to produce green natural gas using extremophilic microorganisms.

Gleichzeitig, she was enthralled by the competition’s scope: “62 proposals from Germany and throughout the world demonstrate how much creative potential has been mobilised here.” At the same time, the start-ups demonstrate that their concepts are also financially viable. Only by combining the two will we be able to make our dream of a bio-based economy a reality.”

Kelheim Fibres has made it a stated objective to accelerate the transition from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy; their specialised fibres are increasingly replacing fossil resources in a variety of applications. In order to do this, the fibre producer uses an open innovation approach to seek inspiration and exchange within its own industry as well as with innovative partners from outside the industry, start-ups, and science.
