Scientists at Canada’s University of Waterloo have created an ingenious display that displays information via clothing and other materials. The new technology, dubbed PocketView by the scientists, displays basic information using LED lights. It can be used as a stand-alone piece of technology or integrated into present or future-generation smart gadgets.
Designs of phones, pencils, key fobs, and various shapes and sizes were constructed by the experts. The display illuminates through fabrics to provide email or message alerts, time, weather, or other types of general details. “The aim is not to reveal all of the information that you would normally see on your smartphone display,” said Antony Albert Raj Irudayaraj, a PhD researcher at the University of Waterloo’s Cheriton School of Computer Science.

“These are displays that show only the most valuable information.” If you’re walking or bicycling, for example, that’s sufficient to display basic navigation information. Let’s imagine you got a message and don’t want to be distracted from what you’re doing. “You can notice the notification if you look at the display,” he was reported as saying in a university press statement. A team of experts active in the sector of human contact created the new screen technology. One of their objectives is to make products that ordinary people desire and need, thus the team performed a large public poll that informed the design of the prototypes.
“Several of the survey responses pushed us to reconsider the size, design, and functioning of the displays,” said Nikhita Joshi, a PhD researcher in computer science at Waterloo. “The variety of sizes is significant because so much women’s apparel has tiny pockets.” A phone in the front pocket can be inconvenient. Having something little simply provides them a lot more choice. “We devised a wide range of form-factors that are also ideal for tiny pockets found in women’s clothes,” she explained. Because the display devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they can be worn and used in any piece of clothing with a pocket. Another important aspect of the new led displays is that it is quite affordable and can be readily and rapidly implemented on a big scale. Although they are presently working to hold prototypes, the researchers believe that the next generation of these LED displays might be simply integrated into existing gadgets. Moreover, while other wearable display research focuses on developing new high-tech textiles, PocketView’s usability implies that it can be worn with garments that people already own.
