Cotton acreage in Gujarat is expected to expand by 10% this kharif season, thanks to farmers receiving good prices for the natural fibre last year. Currently, the state’s cotton crop area has grown to 16.50 lakh hectares from the same time last year. According to the most recent statistics provided by the state agricultural department, this is the case.
When compared to the same period last year, the area under cotton cultivation in Gujarat has grown by around 7%. According to an industry representative, this is owing to high cotton costs last year. Cotton acreage has averaged 25.53 lakh hectares during the last three years. Because of the stalling monsoon, groundnut planting has been postponed.
In the 2020-21 season, Gujarat’s cotton output is expected to increase to over 97 lakh bales. One bale weighs 170kg, whereas a candy costs Rs 52,000 per sweet. High-quality Shankar-6 cotton is presently priced between Rs 51,500 and Rs 52,000 per sweet. Despite a decrease in acreage last year, Gujarat’s cotton production is anticipated to increase this year. The previous season’s output was 95 million bales.
