The Erode Textile Merchants Association called for a one-day strike on Friday, shutting down over 4,000 textile wholesale, retail, and textile businesses and merchants working with yarn in the region.

The strike was called to protest the rise in the GST (goods and services tax) from 5% to 12%. The textile sector and its related industries like as weaving, dyeing, printing, and textile trading, according to Kalaiselvan, President of Erode Cloth Merchants Association, are already confronting issues such as yarn price hikes and pollution.

Now, he claims, the increase in GST will have an impact on textile manufacture and sales. The textile sector went on strike to attract the attention of the Union government to the GST, according to the association president.
