Gildan, which owns the Alstyle, American Apparel, and Comfort Colors brands, has joined the United States Cotton Trust Protocol, a farm-level, science-based initiative that establishes new criteria for more sustainably farmed cotton.
Gildan is one of the leading domestic consumers of cotton from the United States, which accounts for the bulk of the fibre used in Gildan’s goods. The Trust’s mission is to provide quantitative and verifiable goals and benchmarks to sustainable cotton production, as well as to drive continual progress in six key sustainability indicators. The Protocol Credit Management System also provides members with complete supply chain transparency.
As a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, Gildan has joined the US Cotton Trust Protocol. Gildan will give third-party validated guarantees that its field-to-mill supply chain is obtaining ethically produced, high-quality fibre while lowering environmental and social risk. The firm is one of several to join the organisation, which strives to assure ethical and sustainable cotton production.
A multi-stakeholder Board of Directors oversees the Gildan Cotton Trust Protocol, which includes representatives from brands and retailers, civil society and independent sustainability experts, as well as the cotton-growing sector. The Trust Protocol strives to guarantee that all stakeholders in the cotton sector have a say in the business’s future decisions.
