Following Australia, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged the European Union (EU) to extend its trade benefit to Bangladesh for another 12 years following the country’s graduation from LDC status in 2026. According to the BGMEA, the extension will assist Bangladesh in making a smooth transition from LDC to facing post-graduation problems.
In a meeting held with the European Union’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Charles Whiteley, in Dhaka, BGMEA president Faruque Hassan decided to share the accomplishments of Bangladesh’s RMG industry in worker safety, environmental protection, and worker well-being, according to a press statement from the association. Hassan also commended the EU for removing the 7.4 percent import-share threshold from the GSP-plus susceptibility condition, which will allow Bangladesh to apply for GSP-plus benefits following its LDC graduation.
Furthermore, the BGMEA president urged EU cooperation in boosting the capacity of BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) students in textile, apparel, fashion, and business through collaboration with renowned EU institutions.
