JOHANNESBURG – TFG, the owner of Foschini and Sportscene, wants government to speed up the planned removal of import duties on yarns, which are cotton threads used to make fabric.
TFG manufactures more than 25 percent of its clothing locally.
The Trade and Industry Department wants to increase the local manufacture of clothes.
But barriers, including a 15 percent import tax on yarn, make it less competitive to produce fabric in SA.
TFG says input costs need to come down to make production more affordable.
