Cotton Association of India (CAI) has decreased its final cotton crop estimate for the season 2020-21, which concluded on September 30, 2021, by 1.50 lakh bales to 353.00 lakh bales of 170 kg each (equivalent to 375.06 lakh running bales of 160 kg each) from 354.50 lakh bales of 170 kg each (376.66 lakh running bales of 160 kg each).
The CAI has kept its cotton crop forecast for the Northern Zone at the same level as the previous month, i.e. 65.50 lakh bales. The Central Zone cotton crop estimate has been lowered by 2.50 lakh bales to 191.00 lakh bales, down from 193.50 lakh bales previously. The crop estimate for Gujarat has been lowered by 2.00 lakh bales, while the crop estimate for Maharashtra has been reduced by 0.50 lakh bales compared to the previous forecasts for both states.
The cotton crop forecast for the Southern Zone has been boosted by 1.00 lakh bales to 91.50 lakh bales, up from 90.50 lakh bales previously. Cotton crop forecasts for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been increased by 0.50 lakh bales each, while cotton crop predictions for Telangana, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh have been maintained at the same levels as earlier predicted.
The CAI’s yearly Cotton Balance Sheet calculates total cotton supply until the end of the cotton season, i.e. up to September 30, 2021, at 488 lakh bales, which includes the Opening Stock of 125 lakh bales at the start of the cotton season, cotton crop for the season estimated at 353 lakh bales, and imports estimated by the CAI at 10 lakh bales, which is 5.50 lakh bales less than the previous year’s import approximated at 15.50 lakh.

Domestic consumption for the crop production year, i.e. up to September 30, 2021, has increased by 5 lakh bales to 335 lakh bales, according to the CAI. Based on comments from exporter members, the CAI has boosted season exports by 1.00 lakh bales to 78.00 lakh bales from its earlier forecast of 77 lakh bales. The CAI’s new cotton export figure is 28 lakh bales more than the previous year’s cotton export forecast of 50 lakh bales.
