The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) is working to construct a single storage unit in the Savar industrial hub to assure fair prices and quality of rawhides and skins, as well as proper item management. BSCIC will be the implementing body for the planned storage unit on the outskirts of Dhaka.
The decision was made at a meeting of the taskforce formed in response to the demands of several parties, including the Bangladesh Leather Goods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (LFMEAB). The event was presided over by Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun. The tannery estate contains 205 plots. According to Bangla media reports, 155 of these have already been allotted, and 132 are presently operational.
Thousands of pieces of rawhide from sacrificed animals went unsold in prior years during Eid-ul-Azha. After failing to achieve projected prices, several people buried and tossed away their rawhides, while others bought them for a pittance.
A precipitous drop in rawhide prices prompted small, medium, and seasonal vendors in several locations to experience massive losses during the Eid holidays. If a centralized storage facility for rawhides and skins is established in the country, such a scenario will not occur in the future.
