Inditex, the parent company of Zara, has stated that it has accelerated its net zero carbon emissions objective by a decade to 2040.
Executive chairman Pablo Isla made the news at the company’s annual general meeting, along with the introduction of a number of other sustainability measures.
Inditex has set new goals for cotton, energy, and water supply. By 2023, the business expects 100% of its cotton to be more sustainable or recycled, two years ahead of plan. Inditex also intends to reduce water use in its whole supply chain by 25% by 2025.
Inditex said it would continue to support new textile recyclability research in the next years, in collaboration with supply chain partners. The organisation will also strive to maintain progress on current pledges, such as making all cellulosic fibre clothing sustainable by 2023 and guaranteeing that all polyester and linen is recycled or sustainable by 2025. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, group sales reached €20.4 billion (US$24 billion) in 2020, according to shareholders at the meeting.
