According to the government on Thursday, India’s part in the global textile and apparel trade is 3.9%, and its overall exports in 2023–2024 include handicrafts at 8.21%.
Notably, India ranks sixth globally in terms of textile and apparel exports as of 2023. Compared to the same time in FY 2023-24 ($20,07 million), the total export of textiles and apparel, including handicrafts, increased by 7% during the April–October period of FY 2024–25 ($21,358 million).
According to data provided by the Textiles Ministry, the category of ready-made garments, with exports of $8,733 million, accounted for 41% of total exports of $21,358 million during the April–October period of FY 2024–25. Cotton textiles came in second with 33%, or $7,082 million, and man-made textiles with 15%, or $3,105 million.
With the exception of wool and handloom, which had declines of 19% and 6%, respectively, exports of all major commodities increased between April and October of FY 2024–25 compared to the same period in FY 2023–24.
India’s imports of textiles and clothing items totaled $8,946 million in FY 2023–24, a 15% drop from FY 2022–2023 ($10,481 million).
Between April and October of FY 2024–2025 ($5,425 Mn), the total import of textiles and apparel (including handicrafts) decreased by 1% as compared to the same period in FY 2023–2024 ($5,464 Mn).
