Gujarat has cemented its position as the undisputed king of Indian cotton production for the second consecutive year. The state’s impressive output surged from 87.95 lakh bales in 2022-23 to a record 90.57 lakh bales in 2023-24, despite a nationwide dip in cotton production. While India’s overall cotton production experienced a slight decline from 336.60 lakh bales in 2022-23 to 325.22 lakh bales in 2023-24, Gujarat’s consistent growth underscores its dominance in the sector.

This robust production translates directly to significant export figures. In Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, revealed that Gujarat contributed a substantial 30% of India’s total cotton textile exports in 2023-24. This achievement is reflected in the impressive export figures: India’s cotton textile exports soared from $11,085 million in 2022-23 to $12,258 million in 2023-24, with Gujarat’s share increasing from $2,835 million to a remarkable $3,615 million.

Recognizing the pivotal role of cotton in the Indian textile industry, the Union Ministry of Textiles has implemented a range of export promotion schemes. These initiatives include rebates on state and central taxes for apparel exports, while products not covered under this scheme benefit from the Remissions of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP). Furthermore, India’s network of 14 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and six Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) facilitates access to international markets for Indian textile products.

The ministry has also taken significant strides in enhancing cotton quality through the development of “Kasturi Cotton Bharat,” a premium Indian cotton brand renowned for its exceptional 29 mm and 30 mm long-staple varieties. Simultaneously, the ICAR-Central Institute for Cotton Research, Nagpur, has played a crucial role in advancing cotton research, introducing 333 new cotton varieties in the past decade, including 191 non-Bt and 142 Bt varieties.

Key Takeaways for the Textile Industry:
