The Ministry of Consumer Affairs announced a groundbreaking scheme facilitated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) aimed at upgrading and fortifying the laboratory network in India. With a substantial amount of proposals exceeding Rs 340 crore meticulously reviewed, the initiative is poised to revolutionize the quality infrastructure in India by bolstering testing capabilities in pivotal sectors such as Textiles, Food, Legal Metrology, and Power Transmission.

This strategic move spearheaded by the Ministry is set to fuel growth and development across various domains. The Department of Consumer Affairs, in collaboration with the BIS, is set to provide support in establishing state-of-the-art testing facilities in Government Laboratories. Moreover, the scheme has been expanded to encompass other institutions focusing on research and development, as well as non-profit entities, fostering a collaborative ecosystem for innovation and quality assurance.

Manufacturers equipped with in-house testing facilities are encouraged to integrate their labs into the BIS testing ecosystem through the BIS Laboratory Recognition Scheme (BIS LRS). By aligning with these standards, laboratories across India can ensure conformity and adherence to stringent quality benchmarks, driving competitiveness and excellence in line with global best practices. This visionary scheme is poised to elevate India’s testing capabilities and solidify its position as a quality assurance and testing infrastructure leader.
