The federal government is thinking about requiring a certain percentage of textiles created from recycled materials in its purchasing procedures. In addition to advancing sustainability, the action would help India achieve its objective of becoming a centre for the circular textile economy.

“We will look at government initiatives based on short, medium, and long-term aims and investigate the scope of textile recycle products being made mandatory in public procurement.

The government intends to develop national textile recycling guidelines to ensure that textile recycling is done correctly and sustainably. To guarantee that workers in the industry have access to the most recent technology, the government may shortly develop textile recycling clusters.

India’s integrated textiles sector is the second-largest in the world, so there is a big chance for it to improve its circular capabilities. By concentrating on the sector, we can improve the textile waste value chain in India and create more jobs while reducing pollution caused by textile waste.

The government’s Ministry of Textiles intends to conduct an evaluation of the current capabilities of the textile waste processing industry before beginning a broad mandate. In order to determine how to advance technology in the business, the Textiles Ministry will also evaluate whether the sector complies with worldwide standards.
