For how long have you been awaiting your OPT EAD card?

Keep track of the latest processing times on USCIS’s website to estimate when your application might be completed.   • During the initial week: Access your receipt notice online through your USCIS account. Should any inaccuracies be present in your name, address, or application type, seek assistance from your DSO.
  • Within the timeframe of 30-45 days: You will also receive an I-797c receipt notice via mail, confirming receipt of your OPT application and providing your receipt number. Safeguard this notice as it serves as official proof of submission, potentially needed for travel or other purposes.
  • Approximately 1-3 months later: Anticipate receiving an I-797 Notice of Approval letter and an EAD card at your designated mailing address. If you’ve e-filed, the notice will also be accessible in your USCIS account. These items may arrive separately or together. Review all details on your EAD card and inform your DSO accordingly. Once received, you are authorized to commence work on the specified start date. In case of any errors on the EAD, consult your DSO adviser. Refer to USCIS’s current OPT and STEM OPT processing times for updates.
  • 2 weeks after EAD card reception: Expect to receive your Social Security Card by mail if you have requested it.
How to Track my OPT Application Case?

Opting for e-filing provides you with the opportunity to track your Case Status via your USCIS online account. Note that your application is anticipated to remain in the received status during the processing period until it obtains approval. Select the following options: Form: “I-765”, Form Category: “Based on a request by a qualified F-1 academic student [(c)(3)]”, Service Center: “Potomac Service Center”.

After submitting your OPT application to USCIS, is it possible to make changes?

Usually, once your OPT application is submitted to USCIS, you can’t modify any information except your mailing address.

Will the days of pending EAD count towards my OPT unemployment period?

Your OPT begins on the start date indicated on your EAD card. The days pending approval will not be considered as OPT unemployment days OPT失业期.

Am I permitted to engage in on-campus or off-campus employment while awaiting my EAD?

Once you complete your degree, you are unable to engage in any employment until you possess the work permit (EAD) and the designated start date for employment as stated on it has arrived, irrespective of whether your prior application for employment was approved.

Is it possible for me to commence unpaid work while awaiting my EAD?

No, any paid employment requires authorization to work. You must possess the card and wait for the designated start date to begin working.

Can I travel during the processing of my OPT application?

While it’s technically allowed to travel while your OPT application is being processed, it’s not recommended due to potential risks involved.
