The E-Commerce marketing giant, Flipkart has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Assam Government’s Industries and Commerce Department to promote the state’s local arts, crafts, and handloom sectors by bringing them into the e-commerce fold.
According to the Assam government, the partnership with the Industries and Commerce Department under the ‘Flipkart Samarth’ program will enable national market access for Assam’s artisans, weavers, and craftsmen, allowing them to showcase their hallmark products on Flipkart’s marketplace.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister of Industries and Commerce.
“Industries and Commerce Dept signed an MOU with @Flipkart today in my presence through an online virtual platform. Flipkart will establish Flipkart Samarth program to enable national market access for artisans, weavers, and craftsmen of Assam,” tweeted state minister of Industry and Commerce, Chandra Mohan Patowary, hailing the move.
Flipkart’s Samarth initiative works with NGOs, government bodies, and livelihood missions to reach out to a large number of rural entrepreneurs, with a special focus on women-led enterprises, differently-abled entrepreneurs, artisans, and weavers, who often face obstacles such as lack of access to working capital, poor infrastructure, and inadequate training.
Rajneesh Kumar, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of Flipkart Group said, “Through this partnership, local artisans, weavers and handicraft makers will enjoy dedicated benefits under the Flipkart Samarth program that will further boost their growth and aspirations.”
