The first textile waste processing facility in the city will be established by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). According to officials, the program attempts to address the 100–125 tonnes of textile waste produced every day that cannot be handled with ordinary solid garbage.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board’s (MPCB) approval will determine the unit’s final location, although officials stated the unit’s setup tender will be released this month.

Every day, Pune produces between 900 and 1000 tonnes of wet waste and 1200 to 1300 tonnes of dry waste. The PMC features 13 dry waste processing plants and 12 wet waste processing biogas plants. Approximately 100 to 125 of the 1200–1300 dry waste that is produced every day is textile waste. This comprises, among other things, furniture, glass fibers, mattresses, cushions, clothing, shoes, and leather bags.

“The processing unit will process the textile waste in an eco-friendly manner & prevent harm to nature,” said Sandip Kadam, head of PMC’s solid waste management (SWM) department. The majority of people never think about how this waste affects the environment.

Kadam went on to say that processing textile waste alongside ordinary solid garbage is difficult.

Because of its size, this textile waste cannot be compacted and becomes trapped in the feeder conveyor, making it unsuitable for processing alongside other dry trash. This month, a tender will be released to establish a specialized textile waste processing facility,” he continued.

Officials anticipate that the dedicated textile waste processing unit will cost between ₹3 and ₹4 crore, while the exact amount will depend on how much land and equipment are allocated.
