Significant Drop in Italy’s Cotton Yarn Prices; Tonnes Now Cost $5,651

Italy Cotton Yarn Import Price in April 2023

The price of cotton yarn in April 2023 was $5,651 per tonne (CIF, Italy), down -9.8% from the previous month. The import price experienced a little decline throughout the time period under consideration. The month of August 2022 saw the highest growth rate, with a month-over-month gain of 14%. In turn, import prices rose to their highest ever level of $7,772 per tonne. The average import prices did not increase from September 2022 to April 2023.

The primary providing nations’ average pricing varied significantly from one another. Egypt had the highest price in April 2023 ($9,706 per tonne), while Spain had some of the lowest prices ($3,348 per tonne).

Spain witnessed the highest rate of price growth from April 2022 to April 2023 (+0.8%), while prices for the other major suppliers saw a fall.

Italy Cotton Yarn Import Prices by Type 

The price of cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, not put up for retail sale, was among the highest ($6,181 per tonne), while the price of cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, not put up for retail sale, was among the lowest ($3,370 per tonne). Prices varied noticeably by product type.

The most noticeable rate of price growth between April 2022 and April 2023 was achieved by cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), offered for retail sale (-0.6%), while the prices for the other items fell.

Italy Cotton Yarn Imports 

Cotton yarn imports into Italy rose sharply to 5.6K tons in April 2023, increasing by 7.2% against March 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when imports increased by 101% against the previous month.

In April 2023, the value of imported cotton yarn decreased to $32M (IndexBox estimates). However, overall imports continue to show a significant decline. The increase of 66% m-o-m in September 2022 was the highest growth rate ever seen.

Italy Cotton Yarn Imports by Type 

The greatest type of cotton yarn supplied to Italy in April 2023, accounting for 77% of all imports, was cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), containing 85% or more by weight of cotton and not intended for retail sale (4.3K tonnes). Additionally, the figures for cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, not put up for retail sale, were four times higher than those for cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), containing less than 85% by weight, not put up for retail sale (973 tonnes).

Between April 2022 and April 2023, the volume of imported cotton yarn (other than sewing thread) that was not intended for retail sale increased at an average monthly rate of growth of -3.6%. The following average monthly rates of growth were noted for the other supplied goods: cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, not put up for retail sale (+0.7% per month), and cotton yarn (other than sewing thread), put up for retail sale (+13.8% per month).
