However, this has resulted in a persistent problem – a staggering volume of synthetic fibre waste accumulating in the marketplace.

In a linear economic model, textile products are typically produced, used, and disposed of without considering the consequences. Shockingly, India alone sees approximately 7,793 kilotons, or 8.5% of global textile waste, accumulating annually. While some of this waste is recycled or reused within the industry, a significant portion remains in landfills or incineration facilities.

This linear model’s impact is economic, material, social, and environmental. A circular economy (CE) approach has emerged to address these challenges. By prioritizing reuse, repair, and recycling, a CE aims to extend the lifespan of textile products and keep materials within the economy. Transitioning to this model is crucial to reducing resource pressure, fostering sustainable job growth, and securing our nation’s economic prosperity.

Recently, NSRCEL, the incubation arm of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), organized an event called “Circular Conversations: Where Innovation and Impact Collide.” This event aimed to bring together industry stakeholders, innovators, and start-ups to showcase their efforts in driving innovation and creating a positive impact within the circular economy domain. Through such collective endeavours, the disruptive potential of circular textiles becomes evident as it promises a more sustainable and prosperous future for the industry.
