Polyester, being a synthetic fabric, is proven particularly appropriate for recycling in situations where recovered material is unrecognizable from fabric made from raw fossil resources. The Audi A3 seat fabric is an example of material reclaimed from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles being utilised to manufacture the car’s upholstery

PET is a broad sense thermoplastic polymer that is a member of the polyester polymer family. Polyester resins are attractive candidates for recycling because of their mechanical, thermal, chemical, and high stiffness. TWD Fibres GmbH, one of Audi’s partners in progress of manufacturing automobile seats from reused plastic bottles, offers the following five reasons to recycle PET:

Virgin polyester is a scarce resource.

Recycled polyester reduces CO2 emissions.

TWD Fibres is always looking for new applications.

In terms of quality, recycled polyester is equivalent to virgin polyester.

Recycling helps to reduce waste and pollutants.
