Milano Unica’s latest Tendenze theme, “Performing MU,” explores the synergy between the body, space, and textile design. Emphasizing performance as physical movement, artistic expression, and textile functionality, the concept reflects the evolution of the industry toward comfort, dynamism, and creativity, driven by innovative materials.
The theme was unveiled during the talk “Performing MU: Feeling the Present”, where Milano Unica President Simone Canclini reiterated the show’s leading role in global textile trends, the significance of sustainability, and the need to nurture emerging talent. He announced the presence of Mittelmoda at the next Tendenze edition on October 16.
Event curator Antonella Martinetto emphasized the role of skilled textile labs in crafting visionary prototypes aligned with the new themes, encouraging designers to draw inspiration for future collections.
Artistic Director Stefano Fadda presented “Performing MU” as a multi-layered concept linking the expressive potential of the human body to technical fabric applications and artistic experimentation—embodying the essence of Made-in-Italy design.
Sociologist Francesco Morace offered cultural insights, framing performance as a mode of creative resistance in uncertain times. Gen Z, he noted, uses the present as a platform for new identity-driven expressions.
From the world of entertainment, Laccio (Creative Director, Laccioland Studio) highlighted how performance costumes—like those seen in shows such as X Factor—are crucial in enhancing stage presence, underlining fabric’s integral role in movement and storytelling.
Fadda and Antonio Matozzo detailed how the concept influenced material selection for the three key themes: Performing Space, Performing Bodies, and Performing Arts.
Wrapping up the session, Massimo Monteforte stressed that imagination and craftsmanship remain central pillars of Italian excellence, driving the future of textiles beyond boundaries.
