REPORT ON NATIONALCONVENTION ON COLOURATION & RECENT TEXTILE TRENDS

A National Convention on “Colouration and Recent Textile Trends” was organized in Uttar Pradesh Textile  Technology Institute, Kanpur (formerly known as GCTI Kanpur) in collaboration with the Society of Dyers &  Colourists (SDC) EC, India on 8th and 9th September 2023. Renowned industrialist Shri Badri Prasad Gupta (President, UP Hosiery Udyog Mandal, & President, Rooma Industries Association, UP) was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function of the event. Along with him, Dr Siddhartha Panda, Professor and Dean (Students affairs), IIT Kanpur was the Guest of Honorary Senior Officials of SDC India including Shri Anjani Prasad (Honorary Chairman), Mr. Sandeep Singh (Hon. Vice Chairman), Dr. Pratima Goyal (Hon. Treasurer), Dr. Vishaka Karnad (Hon.  Secretary), Dr. Suman Mundkur and Dr. Vibhuti Barve Khedekar, were present and played important roles in organizing the convention. Dr. A. K. Patra (Professor & Head, Textile Chemistry), Dr. S. Maity (Assistant Professor, Textile Technology), Er. S. K. Rajput (Associate Professor, Textile Chemistry) were in the organizing team from Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute (UPTTI) under the leadership of Dr. G. Nalankilli (Director, UPTTI).

More than 200 participants joined this convention from various industries, academia and research organizations. Industry leaders mainly from the textile manufacturing units in and around Kanpur like Mahavir Spinfab, Hiltex Overseas, Motilal Dhulichand Ltd, Ganesha Ecosystems, Cannon Threads, Ishita Textiles etc. participated in the event. AMA Herbal Laboratories, Lucknow, a well-known natural dyes manufacturer also had an active participation in the event. Faculty from different academic institutions and scientists from research organizations including DMSRDE Kanpur also attended the event.

The convention was mainly in the form of panel discussions, invited lectures, industry kaleidoscope and students poster presentation. In panel discussions, topics of recent interest in textiles were taken up and experts from industry and academia were the distinguished panelists. They shared their knowledge and expertise, which was very useful for the delegates and students. Plenary Lecture was delivered by Prof. N. Sekar, ICT Mumbai on “Trends in dyestuff chemistry for responsible coloration”. An interesting talk was delivered by Mr Anjani Prasad, (Chairman,
SDC EC & MD Archroma) on “Futuristic trends in Textiles” Mr Yawer Ali Shah (Co-founder and CEO AMA Herbal Laboratories, Lucknow) delivered an invited talk on “Commercialization of Natural dyes”. He discussed the scope of natural dyes in textile sector as one of the sustainable dyeing practices which we need to accept to save our planet. Synthetic dyes and colours are not sustainable and their motto is to fully replace chemicals with natural dyes, and biomolecules. Prof. Raju K. Gupta, from IIT Kanpur, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, presented his research findings
in the Invited Talk on “Advanced oxidation technologies based on photocatalysis for water remediation application”. He summarized various water pollution bodies, rivers, lakes in India, health hazards out of that. He discussed about water remediation and purification techniques based on photo-catalytic reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is the latest and sustainable technique. The keynote address of the convention was delivered by Dr K K Mishra (Director, Wool Research Association, Mumbai). He talked about recent advances and scopes of woolen textiles and clothing
in India. Dr. Pintu Pandit, Assistant Professor of NIFT Patna delivered Invited Lecture on “Sustainable colouration, printing, finishing of textiles” by using various natural dyes, finishes, biomolecules extracted from natural leaves, flowers, pea nutshell, coconut shell, etc. His research group in NIFT Patna developed various multi-functional clothing accessories and products using natural dyes and extracts only.

There were three panel discussions conducted in the convention, viz. (i) Textile Dyes- need of the hour, (ii) Sustainability in Textile & Fashion and (iii) Functionalization of Clothing- New horizons. Mr Anjani Prasad (MD Archroma), Mr Jayant Khera (VP-South Asia, DyStar Ltd.) and Mr Aneel Murarka (MD, Mira Chem) were the moderators of these panel discussions, respectively. Mr. Amir Sheikh (Head Marketing, Zydex Industries Pvt. Ltd.), Mr. Karun Tyagi (COO, Intexso Biochem) made presentations in the Industry Kaleidoscope while Mr. Murugan Tenkondar (President Mktg, Birla Cellulose), Mr. Shyamlal Patnaik (Jt President, Birla Cellulose), Mr Anirudh Pangam (Head-Technical Services Laboratory, DyStar) and Mr. Vignesh Amalraj (Institute for Ecology, Technology and Innovation)) were among the distinguished panelists in the convention for the panel discussions. Some of the senior faculty members from UPTTI Kanpur, Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology Kanpur, NIFT Patna, were also there as panelists.

There were more than 120 student participants in the convention, and among them 50 students were from outside like IIT Delhi, ICT Mumbai, NIFT Patna, NIFT Bareilly, IICT Bhadohi, GBPUAT Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology Kanpur, Govt. Polytechnic Kanpur, etc. There was a research poster presentation session and competition where more than 30 research based posters were presented by the PhD,
PG and UG students.

The convention was ably sponsored by Grasim Industries (Aditya Birla), Birla Cellulose, OETI, Liva fluid fashion, Zydex Industries, DyStar Group, AMA Herbals, Intexso Biochem, Amogh Chemicals Pvt. Ltd., Mirachem Industries and Hiltex Overseas.

The convention ended with a valedictory session, prize distribution to poster winners, and vote of thanks.
