Over the past few years, garment dyeing has gained considerable significance and popularity due to its cost-saving benefits and alignment with fashion trends. The technique is commonly employed for items like activewear, jeans, shirts, slacks, leisurewear, pullovers, skirts, lingerie, socks, and sweaters.

Garment Dyeing Machine: What Is It?

Garment dyeing machines are specifically designed to dye garments after they have been assembled. These machines ensure the even and consistent application of dye on various textile materials. The primary goal of garment dyeing is to impart colour to the finished garment, enhancing its appearance and value.

Features and Types of Garment Dyeing Machine

In recent decades, textile companies have faced increasing pressure from the market to supply sports and leisurewear within tight deadlines and in the most trendy colours of the moment. This poses a challenge as the traditional textile production cycle, involving dyeing, make-up, and distribution, is not designed to meet such short timeframes, resulting in significant sales losses. 

However, by adopting the piece dyeing process, companies can effectively reduce the time required from customer demand to meet the market’s need for cool colours and stylish finishing processes. With this approach, textile manufacturers can promptly respond to market demands, ensuring quick turnarounds and keeping up with the latest fashion trends.

To cater to the ever-changing colour preferences in fashion, manufacturers of dyeing machines now provide a diverse range of garment dyeing and finishing machines. These machines typically follow a rotational mechanism, resembling industrial washing machines on a larger scale. To facilitate the finishing process, the garments are loaded into dedicated baskets.

1. Pedal Dyeing Machine

Paddle dyeing refers to a textile dyeing process that involves the use of a machine equipped with paddles, resembling a paddle wheel found on a boat. While this technique is slower compared to other methods, it is particularly well-suited for dyeing garments. Heat is generated by injecting steam directly into the dye bath, ensuring an even distribution of heat throughout the machine. The paddle dyeing machine operates by circulating both the dyebath and the garments on a perforated central island.

On the other hand, pedal dyeing machines are specifically designed for small-scale or artisanal dyeing processes. This type of machine, commonly used in European countries, is the oldest and original method for dyeing garments. There are two types available: the overhead pedal type and the side pedal type. These machines can reach a maximum working temperature of 98℃, and the heating speed, with a steam pressure of 6 kg/cm2, is approximately 5℃/min.

The process can be broken down into several steps: Chemical mixing, Load preparation, Pre-dyeing treatments, Dyeing cycle, Post-dyeing treatments, Rinsing, Unloading, Liquor discharge, and Disposal. 

The paddle dyeing machine offers several advantages, such as being steam-heated, providing a highly efficient liquor flow, and ensuring there is no damage to the garment structure. Additionally, it allows for uniform and patchless dyeing, achieves a low liquor ratio, and enables rapid heating and cooling. Moreover, the machine facilitates quick drop and fill procedures, further enhancing its efficiency and effectiveness in the dyeing process.

The paddle dyeing machine finds extensive application in various types of piece goods, making it an optimal dyeing platform. Its versatility allows for the dyeing of a wide range of items, including rugs, socks, bedspreads, garments, and fabrics. 

2. Rotary Drum Dyeing Machine

The Rotary garment dyeing machine is an advanced version of the pedal-type garment dyeing machine. It is specifically designed for garments that require delicate handling, such as sweaters. Unlike paddle machines, which have a high liquor ratio that is not cost-effective and limits shade reproducibility, Rotary drum machines offer a more economical and efficient solution. Many machinery companies have developed sophisticated rotary dyeing machines that incorporate state-of-the-art technology, with the TOLKAR-SMARTEX Garment Dyeing Machine being a prime example.

There are two types of Rotary garment dyeing machines available: the normal atmospheric pressure type (less than 100°C) and the high-temperature type (more than 100°C).

These machines function by allowing the movement of textile material within a stationary liquor. The rotary drum dyeing machine consists of a slowly rotating perforated cylindrical drum inside a slightly larger vessel. The internal drum is divided into compartments to ensure the rotation of goods with the drum, while the outer vessel contains the required quantity of dye liquor. High-temperature drum machines can process garments up to 140°C.

Modern rotary-dyeing equipment offers various features, including lower liquor ratio, gentle movement of goods and liquor to minimise surface abrasion, rapid heating and cooling, centrifugal extraction, variable drum speed with reversal capability, continuous circulation of goods for improved migration control, easy sampling, variable water levels with overflow rinsing capabilities, large diameter feed and discharge lines for quick filling and draining, microprocessor controls, lint filters, pressure dyeing, and auto-balancing drums.

3. Tumbler Dyeing Machines

The tumbler dyeing machines are employed to handle small garments, either in loose form or enclosed within open mesh bags. In terms of design, they bear a resemblance to commercial laundering machines. The operational concept revolves around loading the material into inner SS tanks equipped with perforations. These tanks, fixed to the back of the drum, rotate around a horizontal shaft. The drum is further divided into compartments, enabling the goods to be moved as the drum rotates. Some tumbling machines offer higher rotation speeds and the ability to spin dry the items after the cycle. These machines function similarly to dry cleaning machines.

4. Toroid Dyeing Machines

Toroid dyeing machines are designed for dyeing garments by allowing them to circulate in a toroidal path within a vessel filled with liquor. To facilitate this circulation, an impeller is placed below a perforated false bottom in the machine. The garments are moved solely by the pumped action of the liquor. In the 1970s, high-temperature variations of these machines were introduced to cater specifically to the dyeing of fully fashioned polyester or triacetate garments. These versions operated at temperatures as high as 120-130°C. The liquor ratio for such machines typically stands at approximately 30:1.

5. MCS Readymade Garment Dyeing Machine

The MCS readymade garment dyeing machine, or rotodye machine, proves to be a perfect choice when it comes to dyeing a variety of fabrics. This efficient machine is designed to handle different materials, including pure cotton, wool, polyester, and cotton blends. It offers a great solution for dyeing various types of clothing articles like T-shirts, sweaters, bath rugs, accessories, as well as socks and stockings.

6. The Gyrobox

The gyrobox, a remarkable machine, incorporates a sizable wheel comprising 12 separate compartments that are not aligned radially. These compartments serve as support for storing goods. Operating at a moderate speed of 2–6 rpm, the wheel ensures efficient processing.

7. Modified Pegg Toroid Whiteley Garment Dyeing Machines
