LUDHIANA: On public platforms, industry representatives may claim to be turning a new leaf by adhering to environment protection laws, but the truth may be toxic. Several dyeing units in the city are not following environment protection laws made to treat dangerous effluent generated by them.

Since such units are not located in a single industrial pocket and are scattered across the city, they are not connected with the Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs), which have been established in areas where such units exist in clusters. According to officials, such units are still draining their  highly polluting effluents into the main sewer channels.
Two Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) are functional n the city to treat highly polluting effluents being generated by dyeing units. These cater to around 150 dyeing units. Since the scattered units are not connected to CETPs, hey were directed to shift their operations to zero liquid discharge technique by March 2023.
