Chennai, India—A new nanotech-coating for textiles has been developed that can eliminate coronavirus within five minutes of contact.
According to reports from various news sources in India, the coating was developed by Muse Nanobots, a subsidiary of Muse Wearables. The study on the coating was made in conjunction with Situ Biosciences, a Chicago-based independent lab that specializes in microbial product testing, and supported by Indian Institute of Technology Madras’ incubation cell.
The study gauged the effectiveness of the antiviral coating on coronavirus 229E, and showed that it inactivated 99.99% of the virus within five minutes. The coating can be applied to any kind of fabric, including face masks, PPE gowns and packaging material. It lasts up to 60 washings when washed under 70 degrees Celsius.
Sai Prasanth, co-founder of Muse Nanobots, was quoted by the Business Standard as saying: “We are the first of the Indian technology companies to prove, via clinical testing and validation, the coating efficacy of our product on coronavirus. Muse Nanobots coating has also displayed strong antibacterial activity on human pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The coating makes the textile surface self-sanitizing and provides a germ-resistant surface.”
The company plans to install nanocoating machines in 15 textiles companies that make items such as curtains, bedsheets, office and casual clothing, sportswear, PPE and packaging material. In addition to direct installations at companies, Muse Nanobots has its own coating facility in Bengaluru where textile companies can send fabric for treatment.
