Indian coir and coir product export have registered all-time high records with rupees 2757.90 crores in the 2019-20 financial year. Export recorded a hike by 30 crores as compared to 2728.04 crores in 2018-19.

Exports of coir pith, tufted mats, coir geo-textiles, coir rugs and carpets, coir other sorts, coir rope, and power loom mats registered growth both in terms of quantity and value. On the other hand, exports of products like handloom mats, coir yarn, rubberized coir, and power loom matting showed a decline in terms of quantity and increase in terms of value, the ministry of MSME said in a statement.

Coir pith with export earnings of ₹1349.63 crores constituted 49 percent of the total export of coir products from the country, while coir fiber with the export of ₹498.43 crores constituted 18 percent of the total coir exports.

The value-added items put together constituted 33 percent of the total exports. Tufted mats topped among the value-added products constituting 20 percent in value.

“The export of coir and coir products never showed a decrease during the period, which shows there is no chance for the coir entrepreneur to worry about the business. The domestic market for coir and coir products also shows an increasing trend,” the statement said.

Coir exports were majorly made through Tuticorin, Cochin and Chennai ports.
