Clothing industry organization seeks EU partnership development.

BGMEA President SM Mannan called for continued cooperation from the European Union in developing Bangladesh’s garment sector during a meeting with a delegation of ambassadors and representatives from EU countries including Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, and Italy on May 19.

Several ambassadors, including Charles Whiteley and Christian Brix-Moller, attended a meeting along with representatives from the EU Delegation to Bangladesh. Other diplomats from countries like Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the Netherlands also participated. Additionally, representatives from the Spanish Embassy and the trade adviser of the EU Delegation were present. BGMEA leaders, including the Senior Vice President and Vice Presidents, also attended the meeting.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested the European Union (EU) to continue cooperating in the development of the garment sector.

During a meeting with ambassadors and representatives from EU member countries, BGMEA President SM Mannan (Kochi) highlighted the achievements in workplace safety and workers’ welfare in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry. He urged the EU to extend support by prolonging the transition period from the EBA scheme to GSP Plus. This extension is seen as crucial for Bangladesh to sustain economic growth post its transition from being a Least Developed Country. Mannan expressed gratitude for EU’s support, emphasizing its importance as the largest trade and development partner for Bangladesh. He also sought cooperation from the EU in capacity building to adhere to the Due Diligence Directive and other forthcoming protocols. Furthermore, he requested the envoys to work with European buyers to ensure fair pricing and ethical sourcing practices in the industry. The meeting aimed to strengthen relations between BGMEA and the EU, highlighting the significance of continued cooperation for the sustainable development of Bangladesh’s garment sector.
