Uncompetitive Policy Forces Gujarat Textile Giants to Invest in Other States

Gujarat, once renowned for its highly lucrative textile policy that attracted an influx of investments totaling approximately Rs 30,000 crore between 2012 and 2017, is facing a setback in its textile sector expansion. Subsequently, textile giants based in Gujarat have sought opportunities beyond the state’s borders to set up new operations.

Notably, Gujarat-based companies, including Welspun, Arvind, Donear, and General Group, have invested approximately Rs 5,750 crore to establish their manufacturing plants in Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. This trend of established textile firms shifting their base from Gujarat to other states for expansion is relatively uncommon.

The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has attributed this exodus primarily to the absence of a dedicated and competitive textile policy.
