In a recent statement, the Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC) highlighted crucial steps needed to reach the ambitious USD 40 billion garment exports target by 2030. AEPC Chairman, Sudhir Sekhri emphasised the importance of a significant ramp-up in production capacities and the upskilling of the workforce to achieve this goal.

Sekhri pointed out the shortage of skilled workers like tailors and quality checkers during peak seasons due to them returning to their native villages. He stressed the need to address this issue to meet the export target. Additionally, Sekhri emphasised the necessity for export houses in India to enhance their capacities to handle core products required in large quantities.

Moreover, the council is actively focused on skilling the workforce, aiming to create 150,000 skilled workers annually to support the industry’s growth. The Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) has been instrumental in providing degrees to students, with a significant number venturing into entrepreneurship or further education, contributing to the skilled manpower pool in the industry.

Rakesh Vaid, Senior Vice-Chairman of ATDC, reiterated the centre’s commitment to creating a skilled workforce to drive the industry’s success. By undertaking these strategic steps, the AEPC aims to turn the USD 40 billion garment exports target into a reality by 2030.
