Revolutionary Herbal Fabric Developed by M S University Researchers

A groundbreaking herbal fabric created by researchers at M S University in Vadodara is set to revolutionise the textile industry. This innovative fabric, infused with extracts of tulsi and incorporating advanced nanotechnology with metallic nanoparticles, boasts remarkable properties that make it highly suitable for undergarments, sportswear, diapers, and sanitary pads.

The herbal fabric, recently patented, offers a range of benefits including protection against UV rays, maintenance of body moisture levels, and potent anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties. Dr. Bharat Patel, along with his PhD student Murtuza Channiwala, spearheaded the development of this fabric known as ‘bioactive lyocell fabric incubated with metallic nanoparticles prepared in-situ using methanolic extract of tulsi leaves’.

The process involved immersing the lyocell fabric in a solution containing metal salts of silver and copper, followed by treatment with tulsi extracts. The resulting fabric combines the therapeutic properties of tulsi with the protective effects of metallic nanoparticles, offering wearers unparalleled comfort and health benefits.

Moreover, this innovative fabric demonstrates exceptional durability, retaining its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties even after 65 home washes. Two industries in Gujarat have already adopted this technology, utilising it to manufacture a range of products including diapers, sanitary pads, and baby wear.

With plans for commercial launch on the horizon, this herbal fabric is poised to transform the textile landscape, offering a sustainable and health-conscious alternative for consumers seeking functional and eco-friendly clothing solutions.
