BASF switches to ethyl acrylate that is biobased.

Beginning in Q4 2024, BASF will replace its (Meth)Acrylate range with bio-based Ethyl Acrylate (EA), marking a substantial move towards sustainability. This action demonstrates BASF’s dedication to lowering carbon footprints and assisting clients in reaching their sustainability objectives. When compared to its fossil-based equivalent, the bio-based EA delivers a significant 30% reduction in Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) thanks to its 40% 14C-traceable bio content, as per DIN EN 16640.

BASF will provide bio-based Ethyl Acrylate BMB ISCC Plus, which incorporates ISCC PLUS certified carbon content derived from fossil-based acrylic acid, in addition to the regular bio-based EA. This variation will offer an even smaller carbon footprint by utilizing BASF’s biomass balancing (BMB) technique.

A wide range of polymer dispersion applications will be served by the bio-based EA, with the coatings and adhesives sectors receiving particular attention. Senior Vice President of Industrial Petrochemicals Europe at BASF, Dr. Reiner Geier, emphasized that the new product offers customers a drop-in option while upholding the same technical and chemical requirements as the conventional fossil-based EA.

“By using bio-based EA, we are not only assisting our clients in achieving their sustainability objectives, but we are also demonstrating our unwavering dedication to the transformation of sustainability,” Dr. Geier stated. “We will stop offering fossil-based ethyl acrylate in Q4 2024 and only provide bio-based ethyl acrylate going forward.”
