Bangladesh’s impending embargo affects clothing retailers H&M and Levi’s

Bangladesh’s government has ordered that a population of about 170 million people remain at home for seven days beginning from Thursday. This is Bangladesh’s most severe blockade to date, with residents only allowed to leave their houses in an emergency. Because of the fresh wave of the Covid case, particularly along the border with India, industries around the region may be forced to close and production may be shut down.

H&M, Levi’s, and PVH shipments to Bangladesh rose in the three months to May 31 compared to the same period in 2019. Bangladesh gains market share as China loses competitiveness in labor-intensive industries such as clothing. Additional supply chain interruptions will harm merchants at a time when resources are already in short supply owing to a variety of causes.
