Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president SM Mannan emphasized the need for fair minimum prices and a unified code of auditing conduct in global discussions with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and buyers to ensure the well-being of workers in Bangladeshi garment factories.

During a meeting with an ILO delegation, the BGMEA president emphasized the importance of a unified code of conduct for audits. The discussion focused on the need for a universally accepted standard for social and technical audits.

Mannan pointed out the importance of consistent auditing practices to prevent unfair treatment of Bangladeshi factories. He called for the ILO to lead the way in establishing a code of conduct to benefit all stakeholders. Mannan also stressed the need for fair minimum prices for garments to ensure the industry’s sustainability and the well-being of workers. The ILO delegation included Mohamad Anis Agung Nugroho, Linnea Strand, and Md Saidul Islam.

During the meeting, discussions focused on ongoing ILO-led initiatives such as the “Better Work Bangladesh” project, which aims to enhance working conditions and safety for garment workers in Bangladesh. Potential collaborations between the ILO and BGMEA were explored to further develop the industry, with a focus on capacity building to meet global regulations like the EU’s “Due Diligence Directive” and improve the well-being of RMG workers. BGMEA attendees included vice presidents and directors, with ANM Saifuddin, chair of the BGMEA Standing Committee on Labour and ILO Affairs, also taking part in the discussions.
