Ascott India and Second Spin Launch Circular Textile Initiative to Address Hotel Waste

Updated:

Ascott India has entered into a partnership with Second Spin, an Enviu venture, to tackle the growing issue of textile waste generated by hotels and other institutions. This collaboration is designed to transform discarded hotel linens into recycled materials, reinforcing a circular economy approach within the hospitality sector. Second Spin, previously known as Retex, has developed a supply chain system that collects, sorts, and upcycles used linens from institutions such as hotels, hospitals, and spas. These textiles are then converted into new products, including paper, yarns, and fibres. With India’s major cities producing over 220 tonnes of textile waste daily—of which nearly 22% comes from institutional sources—the initiative aims to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. The partnership began with seven Ascott India properties, including Citadines OMR Chennai, where 2 tonnes of textiles have already been diverted from landfills. Prashanth Rajkumar, General Manager of Citadines OMR Chennai, highlighted that the initiative embeds sustainability into daily operations and fosters a culture of responsibility among staff and guests. Since introducing its renewed model, Second Spin has diverted over 45,000 kilograms of hotel linens from landfills, working with more than 30 hotel partners. The venture’s focus on traceability and circularity supports both environmental goals and dignified livelihoods for waste workers. Prasanna Raghavan, Head of Finance & Sustainability at Ascott India, emphasised that this partnership aligns with Ascott’s broader commitment to ESG performance and waste reduction, integrating environmental accountability into the company’s operations. The collaboration between Ascott India and Second Spin underscores the hospitality industry’s increasing dedication to sustainable and responsible business practices.
