Asahi Kasei, a leading global chemical company, showcased its cutting-edge solutions for a more sustainable material life cycle in the sportswear industry at ISPO Munich 2023. The international sports trade fair, held from November 28 to November 30 in Munich, Germany, provided a platform for Asahi Kasei to exhibit its groundbreaking technologies and products.
One of the highlights of the exhibition was Asahi Kasei’s novel manufacturing technology for synthetic fibres and textiles derived from biomass feedstock. This breakthrough process enables the production of most synthetic fibres and plastics using renewable raw materials, reducing CO2 emissions and petroleum usage.
Another featured display was the ECOSENSOR™ fabric collection by Asahi Kasei Advance, which offers sustainable and eco-friendly textile options for sportswear. The collection is made from biobased materials and ensures high-performance functionality.
Additionally, Asahi Kasei presented ROICA premium stretch fibre, known for its exceptional elasticity and durability. This high-quality stretch fibre is designed to enhance the comfort and performance of sportswear.
In terms of sustainable membranes, Asahi Kasei showcased RespiGard™, a solvent-free waterproof membrane that combines excellent waterproofness and breathability. The lightweight membrane is produced with a low carbon footprint and is both recyclable and PFAS-free.
Asahi Kasei’s commitment to closing the material life cycle in the sportswear industry was further highlighted by its collaboration with Microwave Chemical. Together, they are developing a new chemical recycling process for polyamide 66, a commonly used material in apparel. This innovative process utilizes microwaves to depolymerize polyamide 66, obtaining the monomers needed to manufacture new polyamide 66 for sportswear.
The sustainability efforts of Asahi Kasei in the sportswear industry have been recognized through various awards, including the prestigious Performance Days Performance Award and the Outdoor Retailer’s Innovation Awards.
