Union Minister of Textile, Commerce & Industries Piyush Goyal has said that India has the potential to become the fashion hub of the world, and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) students and alumni should make India a showstopper in global fashion.
He was addressing the students and faculty of NIFT in New Delhi at their convocation ceremony.
339 graduating students across 10 specialisations are starting their professional journey. The Minister said that he wants the graduates today to work towards making India the ‘Fashion Capital of the World’ in the next five years.
He asked students to make handloom a product of luxury for the world.
Darshana Jardosh, Union State Minister of Textiles, UP Singh, Secretary, Textiles and NIFT faculty were also present on this occasion.
He also insisted that NIFT should empower weavers and artisans by connecting them to the market and helping them get their rightful dues.
“NIFT students have the means to put our rich tradition in textile, design, embroidery on a global platform and make the world drape Indian,” he said.
The Minister said that we all have obligations to help millions of those who didn’t get the opportunity to get a good education or got left behind.
“Design, packaging and branding for the products of artisans can give them great returns. NIFT students can consider working towards this direction. Indian quality should define what is world-class. NIFT has a major role to play,” he said.
The Minister expressed pride for two patents filed by NIFT Delhi faculty members Intelligent Skill Mapping & Rating Technology (i-SMART) (1st commercialised patent of NIFT) and a presser foot for a sewing machine.
