New York Fashion Week kicks off

New York Fashion Week kicks off tomorrow with the city’s first physical runway show since February, though much of the action is happening virtually. With 40 brands packed into a condensed four-day schedule, the “week” starts with Jason Wu’s rooftop show at Spring Studios and ends with Tom Ford’s digital debut. The schedule is missing a few notable names— Marc Jacobs, The Row, Proenza Schouler, Tory Burch—but the silver lining is the extra exposure for up-and-coming talents like Kenneth Nicholson and Maisie Wilen.

Other real and virtual events to look forward to include Harlem’s Fashion Row’sStyle Awards, which will honor leaders of change in our community; Carolina Herrera’s tribute film to 40 years at NYFW; Imitation of Christ’s return to the calendar with a guerilla screening; and CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Collina Strada’s multifaceted virtual show.

The spring 2021 collections will continue long after this week, too. Eckhaus Latta is staging a live-streamed show on September 18 at 1:00 p.m.; Coach’s Stuart Vevers will present a virtual collection of new and archival pieces on September 22; and Michael Kors’s “multilayered digital experience” is scheduled for October 15.
