MINIMALISM: ALL YOU NEED IS LESS

Minimalist fashion is defined by one major principle: keep it simple! Streamlined shapes, a small selection of colors and even a bare minimum amount of clothing in your closet. Simplicity is the key to pinpointing this style.

WHY SHOULD YOU OPT MINIMALISM?

Financial aspect of it. By building minimalist and even capsule wardrobes, millennia’s are in fact, saving money. Yes, the supreme-tailoring and high-quality fabrics that go into creating a minimalistic clothing item come at a cost, but in the long run, minimalists end up spending a whole lot less than every other ‘fashion group’. They invest in clothing wisely, they are calculated and strategic.

ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE Consumerism is a huge contributor to climate change, responsible for up to 60 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Consumers purchasing goods manufactured all over the world means that a lot of transportation is needed to get them to the right place.

The fast fashion trend makes people buy a lot more clothing, which requires a high amount of water to produce and contributes to materials being found on shorelines and other areas they aren’t meant to be, which harms plant and animal life.

Having less stuff definitely reduces your impact on the environment. If you’re consciously monitoring what you buy, you both consume less and produce less waste. Just think of the amount of packaging that comes with what you buy.

MINIMAL FASHION IS NOT BORING

The trick to nailing the new minimalism fashion trend is to focus on the details, like cut, shape, fabrication, and fit.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE BASICS TO START A MINIMAL WADROBE

The 20 Essential Items in a Minimalist Closet

  1. Long-sleeved shirts. Three or four.
  2. Keep the sweaters you can wear with tank tops. Don’t have more than four sweaters.
  3. Two or three casual skirts/dresses. This is for women, and the dude on my street who wears a kilt and rides a unicycle.
  4. One business appropriate outfit. Maybe two. Use blazers as jackets to dress up a casual outfit.
  5. A little black dress.
  6. Two pairs of exercise capris.
  7. Two pairs of running shorts.
  8. One pair of running shoes.
  9. One pair of heels you can walk in.
  10. Two pairs of flats.
  11. Two pairs of sandals.
  12. Three or four scarves of varying weights.
  13. Three good bras (oh, lordy, I wrote bra on my website).
  14. A week’s worth of other unmentionables.
  15. A bathrobe.
  16. One set of loungy clothes/pajamas.
  17. Two swimsuits. Because nobody should have to ever put on a wet swimsuit.
  18. Two or three pairs of jeans. Only keep the ones that make you look and feel good.
  19. Three or four tank tops. For layering, and when the weather gets nicer, for wearing alone.
  20. Short-sleeved shirts. Start with five, then work your way down from there.
