In the framework of C.L.A.S.S., Brewed Protein™ materials by Spiber Inc. represents a significant development that connects biotechnology with sustainable fashion. Brewed Protein™ materials, which include fibers, films, and textiles, are produced through an advanced fermentation process using plant-based sugars, signifying a departure from traditional materials. Spiber Inc.’s technology allows for the molecular design of protein polymers, drawing on natural structures for a range of applications.

The versatility of Brewed Protein™ polymers allow it to replicate the qualities of various traditional materials such as the softness of cashmere, the moisture retention of wool, and the texture of leather, offering a sustainable and ethical alternative. Spiber focuses primarily on the apparel market, addressing the ethical and environmental issues associated with animal-derived textiles, which are known for their substantial environmental impacts.

Spiber’s efforts go beyond innovative materials to embrace a comprehensive approach to sustainability. Brewed Protein™ materials are bio-based and biodegradable, contributing to solutions for microplastic pollution, and show a notable decrease in environmental impacts compared to traditional materials, including lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced water and land use.

C.L.A.S.S. SUSTAINABLE TIP:
WHAT’S THE BEST BEHAVIOUR WHEN PURCHASING CLOTHING?

Let’s hear what our CEO Giusy Bettoni and our Material Manager Luca Olivini have to say about it!

GIUSY BETTONI – CEO & Founder
Here’s a tip: When the OUTSIDE of a product catches your eye—its looks and how it works—make sure to dig into the INSIDE as well. Ask about who made it, where it’s from, and its journey to you. Look at the companies behind it. That’s where a digital passport comes in handy. It’s more than just a stamp of approval; it tells you the whole story of what you’re buying.
LUCA OLIVINI – Material Manager
In today’s fashion landscape, sustainability often operates behind the scenes, subtle and not always apparent. I approach fashion with a focus on the details, paying close attention to the materials and origins of my clothing, ensuring they are traceable. Alongside new purchases, I’m increasingly exploring second-hand options, aligning with a more sustainable ethos. I firmly support the idea of “buy less, buy better and when needed,” aiming to curate a wardrobe that not only suits my style but also respects the environment. This belief drives my buying habits, where I emphasize quality and sustainable practices over mere trends. As a “rule”, I limit my purchases only buying when there’s a genuine need.
