Fast fashion- can be sustainable?

Keeping in mind the impact of sustainable fashion on the environment, the Stockholm Fashion Week event was cancelled last year by the Swedish Fashion Council. A major step was taken to protect the environment by them and yet the fashion industry is not reacting to this major issue. Fashion production makes up to 10% of humanity’s carbon emission. The pollution caused because of the fashion industry, dries up water sources and pollutes the world’s rivers and streams.

After producing so much global waste, 85% of these textiles end up in the dump every year. Plus, thousands of bits of plastic are also sent into the ocean because of the fast fashion sector. In today’s time, the fashion industry, brands and the consumers are also aware about the industrial waste being produced, yet people are getting indulged in purchasing fast fashion clothing.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the fashion industry is negatively impacted, due to which fashion designers are unsure whether to invest their money where people are buying fast fashion. Fast fashion companies like Zara, H&M are offering 24 collections and 12-16 collections every year respectively. Washing of these clothes lead to releasing almost 5,00,000 tons of microfibers in the ocean every year. The 5,00,000 microfibers are equivalent to 50,000 plastic bottles being released.

Many places in the world, barely receive water and here it takes an average of 700 gallons of water just to produce 1 cotton shirt. Overall, the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of all global industrial water pollution.

Keeping all this aside, there are yet some fashion brands which are trying to do their part in saving the planet and are side by side running their business. Brands like Levi’s, Everlane, Pact, Fisher, Eileen and Patagonia are a few brands who not only use sustainable materials but are also very transparent about their production process.

In order to make fashion sustainable, brands will have to be transparent about their process and will have to look out for its social and environmental footprint.
